where we started 3/29/19

Before we get started with the current projects with the team, I feel that it is good that we start assessing where the team is right now. Before I joined the team, in late October 2018 as a volunteer graphic designer, this was the current look of our Instagram

InstaGram

This screenshot was the current look of our Instagram at the very beginning of the 2018-2019 season. You can see two of the posts are announcing the rosters for the D1 and D2 teams. Looking at this, there is nothing wrong with this at all. The team is an RSO and there is no branches of marketing or paid graphic designers to keep a consistent theme and style. I wouldn’t expect anything special or flashy given the current state of this team. Now lets fast forward to today and take a look at what has changed.

Today is March 29th and this are the last 9 posts that are currently sitting on our Instagram page. As you can see it’s an improvement no doubt but I personally think that this can be way better. I’m very inspired by the social medias of the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Gophers, and Michigan Wolverines. They all developed a unique style and keep that consistent theme throughout all their posts. That’s one of our goals for the next season, is to keep consistency and post at least 3 times a week.

Website

Another project that we need to tackle is to update our website. This is what it currently looks like. It’s so outdated and it could use some extreme remodeling. The header image has players that have graduated a long time ago and coaches that are no longer affiliated with the organization. Using pointstreaks.com, our current web editor and hoster, has been a huge pain. I have had several calls with support and designers about how their software works and the whole process is so un-user friendly and frustrating. But I have been working on designing the website and have made many improvements.

This is the design I’ve been working on that I’m thinking that will replace the background of our current design. It’s a very modern and clean design that I think resembles some of the professional NHL team’s websites. I like getting our players involved and being able to incorporate them into our designs

Today I meet with the graphic designers that made our amazing posters for all of our official school sports. These posters are amazing and go into such detail. I love looking at these things and I can’t wait to make the poster for our team. We need to put our name everywhere around this school and what better way to start promoting the team than a kickass poster? They all had really interesting things to say and were very helpful. I am grateful for their time and expertise. unfortunately. We are running into another problem. The CVA is banning pretty much everyone from using their studio. We need that studio! Desperately. That’s how we get all the nice detailed shots of our players with the nice white backgrounds. I’m going to have to talk to someone to do some convincing.

Coming up is the shoot for our promo video. That will be shot on April 6th. Really looking forward to that one and been story boarding the whole video. Hopefully it comes out okay.

Current OBSTacles

By far our biggest threat towards looking like a professional hockey team, is the fact that we lost access to the studio in the CVA. This was the only place where we could get professional images with a clean white background and it really helped boost all of our posts and gave us a clean look. The problem was that kids who weren’t allowed in the studio made their way in and damaged things. I was told that the school is getting so strict on who can use it that even the advanced photo classes might not even use it. So I’m going to have to do some talking and figure out how we can gain the trust of the school and let us use the space we so desperately need. I even enrolled myself in photo 1 next semester just in case those classes might have access. I don’t even need to take photo , but who knows. Maybe this is our only way in.
